Self-Introduction Please…

Mark “Big Boy” Spencer

HOD Technical Crew | (Head) Audio Engineer

The Republic Cultural Centre

As an ex-student of RP, the best skill I learnt was really how to conduct oneself in a group environment and to be objective in dealing with other people and situations. You have to motivate yourself to learn and be very self-disciplined to make the most of your days here. There are a lot of opportunities and resources here, especially at The Republic Cultural Centre, so I encourage you to work hard and make the best of it. Grab it by the b***s!

From your own perspective, what’s JA to you?

In one word? Family. We have fun together yet share in each other’s pain, we correct others yet learn from the same people and from past mistakes and success, we live, grow and love.

Are you a musician yourself? How many years have you been playing, any Performance Experiences?

I play a bit of guitar (and like to think of myself as a jazz drummer too – if you play it wrong, just do it three times over and call it jazz). I started playing guitar relatively late on at the age of 16. It has been a blessing to have been afforded the opportunities to play at various kinds of events, pubs and concerts professionally for nearly 7 years. I was the music director in a church, have travelled regionally to Malaysia and Indonesia to play and have done recording sessions with some of Singapore’s most recognisable musicians and engineers. Some of these places include Timbre, WalaWala, The Esplanade, Sentosa and the Mandarin Hotel. Also I have been extremely fortunate to work with Laz Harris who has produced Mariah Carey.

Who inspires you to do what you do?

I would have to say people, music and life.

How would you describe JA now and Back Then?

Probably like comparing Rebecca Black to Dream Theater.

Any Advice for our future JA members?

If you are coming in to be just a rock star, you’re probably better off working with bands elsewhere. If you are looking to become a complete musician or production person this is the place for you. It is hard work but you will better off for it.

Could you share with us your deepest darkest secret?

If I said would it be a secret? Buy me three pints of beer then maybe we will talk. :)
